Meet the Newest Additions to Our Cast of Characters

At Smile and a Song, we’re always thinking about how to give our young fans experiences they’ll remember for a lifetime. In our last post we were excited to announce our all new wonderland party package, and this month we’re just as delighted to share even more exciting news! We do a lot of traveling for our parties, and in doing so always find ourselves meeting an eclectic cast of characters. (Mad Hatter, anyone?) We love it so much, especially when we become fast friends!

Well, that’s what happened with the three women you’re about to get to know. We got along so swimmingly, we knew they should join our company of Princess Party characters. They were all adamant that they spend this month’s blog post introducing themselves, so without further ado, let’s dive right in!

Ni hao, I am Fa Mulan, the resident Chinese Princess!

My parents named me for the lovely, pink magnolias that were in bloom at the time I was born. You’ll notice the color of those blooms in the traditional hanfu I wear. I spent countless afternoons gazing up into those branches when was younger, and always wondered who I might one day be. My friends and family mean everything to me. If I asked them, they’d for sure describe me as spunky, brave, and clever, and you can bet my father would say I’m a little bit hard-headed (but I secretly think he likes it).

Since taking my father’s place in the war to defeat the Huns, I’ve embraced that fire within. I now know that this is something we all have—even if it takes a little reflection to find it—and now I love empowering little girls and boys to find their own. I firmly believe that strength has no gender, and that we should all set forth to honor who we are inside. There’s no better way to make our loved ones (and dragon guardian spirits) proud.

Speaking of guardians, now’s the perfect chance to hand the mic off to one of the most wonderful “mothers” of all. She’s a bit far away from my homeland of China, but that’s nothing a quick flight couldn’t take care of.

Hello! Call me Wendy, darling.

It’s certainly a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I just tucked the Lost Boys into bed for the night, so I have a few minutes to tell you all about myself before I have to take my dog Nana out for a walk.

I’m not really good at talking about myself, but I think of myself as being very responsible. I really enjoy sewing—you know I once sewed Peter’s shadow back on—and am really hard-working. My parents say it’s time for me to grow up, but I’m not sure how I feel about that.

She’s also a real good mother! Tell ’em about the crocodile! Oh, goodness me. I sincerely apologize for that interjection. It appears one of the boys was only just pretending to be asleep. I need to put this little one to bed, so I must hand this off now to the last of us. Maybe she can tell them about the croc! I believe that was an alligator, dear. They don’t have crocs in New Orleans. Ugh, same difference!

Hi ya’ll, my friends call me Tia!

It seems like the Lost Boy was referring to Louis, one of my friends from the swamp. Bless his heart. Louis is an alligator who taught himself how to play jazz. If you’ve never seen him with his trumpet, you’d be just amazed. It just shows you what you can achieve with hard work!

That’s how I was able to open my restaurant, with hard work and a lot of gumption (not to be confused with gumbo; mmmm!). It was my father’s dream to bring delicious food to the people of New Orleans, and even though we’ve been without him for a while now, I still knew I needed to make his dream come true!

When I’m not in the kitchen whipping up new recipes, which is rare, I know it’s important for me to let loose a little and dance the Charleston. I mean, it is the roaring twenties! If you’ve never done it before, it’s so much fun. I’d love to teach you the next time you have a gathering! But before I do I have just one word of warning: be careful when you wish upon a star. There’s a reason I’m called the Frog Princess! Of course, that’s all over now. Nothing but blues skies and sunshine ahead.

Fall Down the Rabbit Hole with Our New “Wonderland Party Showcase!”

You’ll never be late for this very important date! This month we are so excited to spotlight our newest, phantasmagorical venture down the rabbit hole. In collaboration with Wonderland Party Props, we at Smile and a Song Princess Parties are proud to officially present the Wonderland Party Showcase — an all-new, original, musical retelling of the classic Alice in Wonderland story!

Are you having a large event or tea party, and looking for the ultimate character experience you won’t find anywhere else? This 30-minute extravaganza stars your beloved, sweet Miss Alice alongside the hilarious Mad Hatter, as well as a slew of other silly characters (who are played, naturally — and with the assistance of many, many “mad” hats — by the inimitable Hatter himself).

This is all booked in a package that includes a 30-minute, interactive, children’s theatre show, as well as a 30-minute meet and greet experience. Our showcase is suitable for both larger venues and your very own backyard. Whether you’re celebrating a loved-one’s unbirthday, or throwing a party “just because,” we’ll provide the scenery and sound for a most decidedly zany production filled to the brim with laughs and memorable moments from the film.

Fall down the rabbit hole into this immersive, theatre adventure with two highly energetic actors in front of a beautiful scenery backdrop, complete with “mile high” stage props. (But don’t worry, the Queen has no authority to enforce rule 42 here.) It will be as though your young guests have been transported to pages of one of literature and film’s most beloved tales.

Pull up a seat to the Mad Hatter’s tea table… but don’t get too comfortable! With him at the head, you are no doubt in for one of the kookiest, craziest games of musical chairs you’ve ever found yourself party to.

Move down! Move down!

Our show is 100% family friendly, and chock a block of clever wordplay that is sure to entertain and delight guests of all ages — young and old, caterpillar and hare alike. After the Wonderland Party Showcase, no one will be leaving without a Cheshire cat grin. There’s simply no better way to celebrate a more fabulous day!

Book this package today for a 30-minute show and a bonus 30-minute meet and greet photo opportunity with the characters. Pricing for the Wonderland Party Showcase is $799. Additional scenery and props can be rented through Wonderland Party Props at an additional charge: www.facebook.com/wonderlandpartyprops or by calling: (661) 250-8164.

How does Smile and a Song get such amazing looking costumes?

From the second your child opens the front door too see their favorite character standing before them, we want them to be whisked away to the fairytale of his or her dreams. There’s is no image more enchanting than one of little eyes lighting up in full belief, wide and round as the saucers at Alice’s very first Mad Tea Party, and as enrapt as Belle’s when she takes her seat at Lumiere’s table.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, capturing love at first sight has to be worth at least a million. Since our blog’s character limit will cap us long before that, we’d instead like to few hundred to tell you about how we’re able to elicit such wondrous responses: our costumes

How are your costumes made (assuming they’re not Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo’d into being)?

Haha, no, but wouldn’t that be quite something! Each of our costumes (Cinderella’s included) is handmade couture brought to life for our company by a talented team of professional costume designers. While we certainly think the work they do is magic, none is used in their process (that we know of). Each costume they create for us is a labor of love, with innumerable hours spent ensuring the addition of even just the littlest details, down to the precise placement of individual rhinestones.

After every weekend’s events, each of our costumes is inspected for wear and tear, and necessary cleaning. Nothing is overlooked, from the beadwork on Tinkerbell’s dress, to the embroidery on Rapunzel’s skirt.

A dream is a wish your heart makes.

One of our most dreamt for and sought after characters is Belle. In our ever-expanding armoire, her costume is the most show stopping. It’s a thing of absolute beauty, and it’s been in the works for years and years. We first started with more of a golden yellow satin, like in the movies, but have since upgraded her to a butter yellow, bringing us closer in line to what you’d experience at the theme parks.

Hers is the heaviest and most difficult costume to wear, but she always achieves that “Wow” factor. The organza underskirt is extremely delicate and has had to be repaired and even replaced multiple times because of snags. We get so excited every time we come up with new ways to add to our costumes’ exquisite authenticity.

Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the favorite(st) of all? While Snow White’s costume is definitely loved by all, the current fan favorite is our newest, upgraded Aurora gown. The skirt, being a full circle skirt, is extremely lush, and the silhouette of the bodice is extremely flattering. The embroidered satin material is just the perfect pink color, bringing to mind Sleeping Beauty’s nickname of “Briar Rose.” The new crown and necklace are heavy, solid metal, with intricate molding and crystals, which only adds to the overall effect. Kids and adults alike just adore it.

Be our guest, won’t you?

Or, moreover, we’d love to be yours! We take so much pride in the costumes all our performers wear, because we know just how much it means to your little one to have their heart’s desires brought to life before them. We live for the smiles we get to bring into the world, both big and small, and from children or adults. Because, after all, imagination has no age.

Smile and A Song specializes in smaller, more intimate boutique parties to ensure that each child receives quality, one-on-one time with their character. Check out our different package options to see which one fits your needs. Though our primary service areas are in Ventura and Los Angeles Counties, we do offer a customized video service if the distance is too much to travel.

We highly recommend booking your party 4-6 weeks in advance to get your choice in dates. Contact us today for more information or event inquiries!

Our Performers Chime In: Who’s Your Favorite Character to Play? Part 1

It’s a universal truth: ask any boy or girl who they’d love to dress up as the most, and you’ll get an answer without hesitation. Come to find out, though our lovely and talented performers are a little bit older now, they definitely still have their favorites, too! (It never really goes away.)

When we asked which characters they love to play the most, they couldn’t wait to share their answers. So without further ado, here’s what they had to say!

Allen: “Lumiere!”

I absolutely love performing as Lumiere! He’s been one of my favorites for as long as I can remember. He’s such an over-the-top and glitzy character, which makes him absolute delight to play. Not only that, he’s also a showman in the truest sense of the word. He’s got that delightful accent, a gorgeous, Broadway-quality costume, and a stunning, showstopper of a musical number. But easily, the best part of playing Lumiere is how much fun it is interacting both kids AND adults! The excited reactions he gets from everyone are priceless, making every event an all around magical experience. Nobody lights up a room quite like Lumiere.

Francesca: “Tiana!”

Hands down, my favorite character to play is Tiana. She has such a cute, funny, down-to-earth personality, and I simply love that about her. I think the energy Tiana puts out into the world, and the values of she stands for, are so important to little girls everywhere. She’s a fierce, ambitious, independent young woman. And not only does she have this passion and vision, but she not afraid to do what it takes to make it a reality. Tiana teaches us all that with a few cups of hard work, a dash of determination, and a dollop of discipline, you can achieve anything you set your mind to, and make all of your dreams come true! (And also, don’t be afraid to stop and smell the roses along the way.)

Emily: “Ariel!”

Of all the creatures in the sea, my favorite to play is definitely Ariel… by a nautical mile! She has the most lovely red hair, and she’s just so curious, and spunky, and fun. She teaches us that no matter how impossible or out there they might seem, we should never be afraid to swim after our dreams. And on top of all that, Ariel has just the most amazing gift… the gift of song. I adore slipping into her flippers (er, shoes), and think my voice fits hers so well. The kids love her, and I do too, and I feel so honored that I get to bring her to life before their eyes. Who doesn’t want to be a mermaid!

When Dreams Come True

In many ways, we are all just big kids with the same endless imaginations we’ve always had. Like the children whose senses of wonder and creativity we inspire every day, we too were once dreamers shaped and influenced by the magic and fun of imaginative play. And so, now that we’re all a few feet taller, nothing delights us more than spreading that shared joy all throughout the lands. Because sometimes, all you really do need is a smile and a song.

The Biggest Birthday Party Trends You Won’t Want to Miss!

Birthday parties are an essential part of childhood, making life-long memories for children and adults alike. Smile and A Song Princess Parties discusses the latest in birthday party trends and how you can throw the coolest party around!

Popular Princesses

Moana and Belle were Smile and a Song’s most popular characters in 2017 since their movies were fresh on everyone’s minds. Parents even built wayfinder boats in their backyards for Moana, and Belle waltzed in several beautiful ballrooms. We even got Lumière out to a few parties as a duo with Belle, where he sang “Be Our Guest”! Belle was more than happy to be a guest at the Director’s Guild of America, where she wore her beautiful Christmas gown.

Snow Princesses maintain their popularity and are showing another surge of interest in 2018. They performed several events throughout the last year, including the Frozen Sing-a-Long at the T.O. Civic Arts Plaza to hundreds of children in attendance. Parents always enjoy decorating with ice castle standouts, hanging snowflakes from the ceiling, and even creating a play area with “real” snow!

Fun-Filled Party Locations

Most of the parties Smile and A Song caters to are boutique parties in the home, but we also attend parties hosted at event facilities. We’ve been to playspaces such as Scooter’s Jungle in Simi Valley, the Hideout in Oak Park, and Kidz Korner in Encino, to name a few popular options for out-of-home parties.

Another classic favorite is Alice and the Mad Hatter, and what better way to celebrate with them than a lavish Mad Tea Party! We have been fortunate to have Wonderland Party Props to create the perfect setting to celebrate a very merry unbirthday and more. Our Mad Tea Parties are not only popular with children, but Alice and the Mad Hatter also make appearances as atmosphere characters at upscale adult events, like the Los Angeles Chocolate Festival and Pastry Show at the Omni Hotel in Los Angeles.

Not in the mood for a Mad Tea Party? We’ve been the guest of honor at plenty of  proper tea parties as well, especially popular with younger girls. The Tranquility Tea Room in Thousand Oaks, various country clubs, and even private homes have been a delightful setting for these smaller-scale parties. Your character princess of choice take the lead at these tea parties, and she would sit at the head of the table and review the proper etiquette for a lady at a tea party. Little girls enjoy a taste of real sophistication by dressing up and attending the event with real china teacups and dishes, complemented with finger sandwiches and pink lemonade.

The Magic of Smile and A Song

With children, every moment counts, which is why we hold our crew at Smile and A Song to the highest standards in all aspects of “character,” no pun intended. Our cast members are rigorously tested to ensure they can give quality performances in any situation, and are trained to never break character, no matter what. We also take care to thoroughly screen our cast members, making sure that they are compassionate, safe, and can work well with children (and adults) of any age.

What Does it Take to Be A Smile and A Song Performer?

It may seem like an easy-going gig to dress up as a favorite character and be a star all day long, but that’s only because Smile and A Song casts top-notch performers who know how to make the show run smoothly. They’ve put in an incredible amount of work to make it seem like effortless fun all day long!

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how Smile and A Song brings authentic characters to your birthday parties and events.

Rigorous Audition Process

It’s clear that a  Smile and A Song performer must convincingly portray their character(s) in physical appearance, mannerisms, and vocal abilities. Performances must resemble their well-known character(s) from their popular movies. Candidates are tested in auditions for their singing, storytelling, and improvisational abilities, to mimic the entertainment demands of an event/party.

In addition to their performance abilities, candidates must also have experience in working well with children, as they will be the heart and soul of our audience! It’s one thing to look and act the part, but a performer must also know how to take cues from our little ones and appropriately respond and act while maintaining their specific character’s poise and disposition.

Training

Once a candidate is selected, they undergo specific training to learn how to properly conduct themselves at a party while remaining in character. This involves further refinement of character mannerisms, including how to pose, walk, and dance like their character. Trainees are expected to thoroughly know every part of their character’s movie.

Performers will also learn how to face paint, give princess/character lessons, and engage large groups of children in dancing, games, and activities. Most often, a performer will be expected to assist a party to witness a princess or character in action.

Never Break Character

Smile and A Song is committed to delivering the best in princess and character party performances, which is why our performers must never break character.

Kids ask tough questions like, “Cinderella, where is Prince Charming?” or, “Elsa, can you make it snow for my birthday?” Our princesses and characters must be able to think on their feet and respond in a positive way while remaining in character. If the children ask, “Are you real?” they must be ready with several responses or reactions to convince them. At times, parents or other adults may ask out-of-character questions, to which our actors must continue to remain poised and respond as their character would. You never know when little ears might be listening!

Physically Strenuous

This is often the ‘unsung hero’ part of the role. A Smile and A Song character role is guaranteed to be physically demanding. Performers must be able to travel long distances in heavy costumes and wigs, complete with petticoats, bloomers, heels, makeup, and more. Southern California has plenty of gorgeous, picture-perfect settings, but it can get extremely hot which adds an extra level of physical demand under layers of costume and makeup. Despite the weather or number of gigs booked, a princess or character’s energy level must never waver or wane.

Makeup must remain in pristine condition and each performance must be as good as if it were the first. We can provide tips to our performers on maintaining the makeup, but it’s up to the individuals to bring the enduringly charming disposition!

The Magic of Smile and A Song

We do ask a lot of our performers, but only because Smile and A Song is dedicated to going above and beyond the expectations of our clients. We realize how important children’s dreams and wishes are, and we set the bar high for our performers in order to make good on that promise. Each one of us enjoys encouraging and inspiring a child’s imagination and making a magical imprint on their hearts forever.

Smile and A Song specializes in smaller, more intimate parties to ensure that each child receives quality, one-on-one time with their character. Check out our different package options to find a match for your event’s needs. Though we primarily serve the Ventura and Los Angeles County areas, we do offer a customized video service if the distance is too great to travel.
